Prince William, oil, honor: Why Argentina is pushing to reclaim Falkland Islands

Prince William begins his six-week deployment in the Falkland Islands today. Argentines aren't ready to give up their claim to what they call the Malvinas just yet.?

With the official deployment of Prince William to the Falkland Islands, another chapter in the nearly two-century-old sovereignty conflict between Britain and Argentina is about to be written.

Argentina has compared him to a ?conquistador,? while Britain maintains the prince?s six-week stint as a rescue helicopter pilot is routine and in fact says Argentina is the one displaying colonial fervor in seeking control over islanders who are happily British.

Located just 300 miles off of Argentina's coast and referred to as the Malvinas by Argentines, the Falkland Islands have been in the hands of the British since 1833. Argentina has not made the islands a foreign policy priority for the three decades since their brief but deadly war with the British took place over the territory.?

But with the 30^th anniversary of the invasion taking place this April, just as Prince William wraps up his tour of duty, and a push by Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to reclaim the islands in light of British oil exploration in nearby waters, the topic has once again been brought to the fore. While some claim that President Fernandez is politicizing the issue, most Argentines, even her foes, agree with the underlying sentiment that the Falklands belong to South America.

According to a new poll by the firm Ibarometro, 70 percent of Argentines surveyed in Buenos Aires consider it important to regain sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. (Only three in 10, however, would want a military solution.)

?No one is saying Argentina should be softer on the issue,? says Pablo Ava, a political consultant in Buenos Aires. ?The Argentinean people are very convinced that the Malvinas belong to Argentina. It would be very politically incorrect to say otherwise.?

Eduardo Diez, who teaches Argentine foreign policy at the University of Buenos Aires, says, however, that economic concerns have overshadowed the fate of the islands. ?We have much bigger problems, such as inflation,? he says.

The recent flurry of activity has pushed the issue back to the top of the national agenda. Though Prince William?s tour will likely receive the most media attention, the dispute began to simmer even before his arrival, particularly in 2010, when British firms began exploring for oil in the waters off the islands.

The president's rhetoric since then, igniting a diplomatic back-and-forth between the two nations, has earned her support not only in Argentina but across Latin America. In the latest example, the South American trade group Mercosur announced a ban on boats with Falkland Islands flags from their ports in December.

There is nuance within opinions, of course. Left-wing activists, for example, have protested outside the British embassy, demanding that their country break off diplomatic relations with the UK. Others have accused President Fernandez of stirring nationalism for electoral purposes. ?

But few will disagree with her end goal, especially as the nation marks the 30^th anniversary of an invasion that saw more than 600 Argentine lives lost. ?Even if the people don?t agree with what the military government did, taking us to war, they believe the kids who went there are heroes. You honor your heroes? memory,? says Mr. Ava. ?It?s not possible to criticize this and not have a political cost.?

CLINTON, Iowa ? The Mount Mercy women?s basketball team might want to think about wearing its road blues during its upcoming homestand after the 15th-ranked Mustangs got their 10th straight win away from home, defeating Ashford, 69-58, in Midwest Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday at Kehl Arena.

Mount Mercy is a perfect 7-0 on the road in conference play this season, and hasn?t lost away from Hennessey Recreation Center since Nov. 26 at the Radisson Roseville Classic. The Mustangs (18-7, 10-3 MCC) have lost three straight at home, however, but can end that dubious streak with a win against Waldorf this weekend.

Mount Mercy shot 55 percent from 3-point range (11-of-20) in Wednesday?s win and outrebounded Ashford, 30-26. Senior guard Emily Greiner scored a game-high 25 points and knocked down five more treys to give her 79 this season, which is tied for fourth on Mount Mercy?s single-season chart. She is second in school history with 239 triples and currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,445 points.

Senior guards Laura Lippert and Micha Mims each hit three 3-pointers and joined Greiner in double figures. Lippert had 14 points, while Mims finished with 12. Mims also collected seven rebounds and three steals Lippert blocked three shots and senior guard Becca Lampe dished out five assists.

There were three Saints in double digits, led by Courtney Panus? 17 points. Gaby ayon chipped in 12 points, Patricia Ramos 11. Panus and Deana Bledsoe snagged six rebounds apiece and Madison Wagner handed out six assists for Ashford (9-15, 5-8 MCC).

Mount Mercy, still two games back of league-leading and ninth-ranked Grand View (20-5, 12-1 MCC), hosts Waldorf (6-17, 4-9 MCC) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Hennessey Rec Center.

Honda slashes annual profit outlook on disasters, yen (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Honda Motor Co forecast a worse-than-expected 65 percent drop in profit for the year to March after natural disasters in Japan and Thailand hammered it harder than its rivals while the strong yen delivered an added blow.

Japan's No.3 automaker was the slowest to recover from supply chain disruptions after the earthquake and tsunami in March, while it was alone in having a car factory inundated by historic floods in Thailand, Southeast Asia's export hub.

In 2011, Honda's global output dropped by a fifth to 2.91 million cars, slipping below 3 million for the first time in eight years. All other Japanese automakers, except Nissan Motor Co, also built fewer cars, but the declines were far less severe than at Honda.

For the business year to March 31, 2012, Honda said it expects operating profit of 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion), hit also by an estimated 8-yen fall in the dollar to 78 yen.

The new profit forecast is far short of the 270 billion yen it projected in August before withdrawing that guidance, citing uncertainty over when car production could restart in Thailand. Honda typically provides cautious projections.

Consensus forecasts from 24 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S put annual operating profit at 283 billion yen. Honda is the first Japanese automaker to report third-quarter earnings.

The "third quarter was worse than everybody thought," said CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets analyst, Christopher Richter.

"But actually their new guidance does imply a pretty good fourth quarter for them and our expectations are for them to enjoy some pretty robust growth next fiscal year as they recover from the twin disasters of the earthquake and the flood."

The Thai floods have hurt other Japanese companies as well. Toshiba on Tuesday posted a 72 percent decline in quarterly operating profit, partly a result of the disaster.

Honda, whose bottom-line has been propped up by its leading motorcycle business and strong finance arm, expects annual net profit to fall 60 percent to 215 billion yen. The figure, reported under U.S. accounting standards, includes earnings made in China.

With production steadily recovering in the final months of 2011, investors have turned their attention to an anticipated jump in sales as Honda restocks its depleted inventory.

Honda said on Tuesday it expects its Thai car factory to be up and running by the end of March, working at full speed in April. It lost an estimated 260,000 vehicles of production globally from supply disruptions caused by the floods, chief financial officer Fumihiko Ike said.

So far this year, Honda's stock is the best performer among Japanese automakers, rising 14.2 percent as of Monday. Tokyo's auto sector index has gained 8.9 percent.

LONGER-TERM WORRIES

Still, concern has lingered over whether Honda might be losing its edge after its top-selling Civic got panned in the United States when it was remodeled last year.

Competition in the United States is set to heat up this year as resurgent giants Ford Motor Co and General Motors Co and South Korea's fast-rising Hyundai Motor Co flex their muscles in the sedan segment that has been dominated by Honda and Toyota Motor Corp.

For the October-December third quarter, Honda's operating profit fell 65 percent to 44.3 billion yen, far short of an average estimate of 81.2 billion yen in a poll of nine analysts by Reuters. Net profit 41 percent to 47.66 billion yen.

"They are not good numbers," said a trader at a foreign bank. "Chances are it will get hit. Honda has outperformed the Core 30," the trader added. "But most of the guys who bought it are long-term guys. We will see how it goes."

While acknowledging the criticisms of the revamped Civic, Honda's chief executive, Takanobu Ito, stressed this month that the car had topped the country's compact sedan segment in the latest quarter, outselling Toyota's Corolla.

Honda is targeting a 25 percent jump in its U.S. sales this calendar year also by shoring up its struggling Acura premium brand.

Before the results were announced, Honda's shares ended down 0.6 percent, while the benchmark Nikkei average ticked up 0.1 percent.

Domestic rivals Toyota and Nissan are scheduled to announce third-quarter earnings next week, with Toyota reporting on February 7 and Nissan on February 8.
