Searching For A Rental House In Phoenix?

Are you looking out for houses for rent in Phoenix AZ? If that's so then you have to know it's not going to be straightforward. With rental houses, you've got to consider a large amount of things before you can move in and make the place feel like it is really your house. These things are not insignificant stuff that you can treat disrespectfully as they determine your comfort and satisfaction after you are already within the home. Hence what must you take into account about the home you'll lease in Phoenix Arizona?

Cost and location

The 2 factors ? cost and location ? should be your top concern when looking for houses for rent in Phoenix AZ . Concerning cost, you surely would not want to move into a place that you cannot afford. That is using your common sense. And, with the initial payment, deposit and other costs you have got to shell out before it's possible to sign a contract you have to at least find a home with a rental price that would deplete your resources. Also, be totally sure the price set is tantamount to the general state of the house itself. Paying too much for a rundown house is downright dumb.

Now, let?s chat about location. Surely, you wish to live in a spot where you can feel safe and secure. This means that you have to try your best to have a look for a pleasant house in a calm neighborhood. The area must be safe enough for you to stroll around at night. It should also be secure enough for you to leave a few windows open. So, be sure to hunt around before deciding on the house to rent[**].

Kind of home

Next, in checking out houses for rent in Phoenix AZ, you also have to judge whether you want a furnished house or not. Plus, you also need to work out whether you would like a fully furnished or a semi-furnished home. When you are roughly certain of what you need, you must find a house that fits the requirements.

Therefore you need to answer 1 or 2 questions, such as the following. What are the furnishings included in the rental package? What portion of the rental will the furniture comprise? Are the furniture still in good shape? What are the conditions referring to damage to the furniture while leasing the house? When you examine all these angles and find propitious answers, then it doubtless means that you have found the house for you.

Briefly finding the ?perfect? house to hire suggests that you have done everything to find the ONE among the many houses for rent in Phoenix AZ that can meet your standards relating to cost, location, and furniture.

Coast Guard: No US guard attacked in Yemen

(AP) ? The U.S. Coast Guard is disputing a report that Guard members were attacked while on a training mission in Yemen.

Guard spokesman Lt. Paul Rhynard says Monday in Washington that while the U.S. has a training mission in Yemen, there are no U.S. Guard personnel in the country at this time and none was involved in an attack.

Yemeni officials reported that an American was injured when three guardsmen were shot at while driving near their hotel in the Red Sea port city of Hodeida on Sunday.

The fuss over Cory Booker

Everything you need to get up to speed on the big story of the day
Cory Booker on "Meet the Press"

No offense, New Jersey?but just why should we care what Cory Booker says?

The Newark mayor, so familiar with the media spotlight, tripped when he criticized Obama ads targeting Romney's Bain days. The guy in charge of America's 67th largest city sure knows how to steal the spotlight.

This time, the attention backfired after he appeared on "Meet the Press" to weigh in on the Euro zone, Facebook's IPO, and Obama's strengths. Since then, America's most popular mayor has taken a brutal political beating from the left and unwanted affection from the right. The turmoil hints at Democrat nerves over what some perceive as a close election, and Republican eagerness to gain a foothold against a presumptive nominee accused of being elitist. One thing might be faintly reassuring, at least to Booker: His words count.

Booker Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube: Besides oodles of charisma, Booker is an exhaustive social media user: He ranks #4 among most-followed elected officials in office and #26 as Most Influential in the Twitter political arena.

He has won the hearts of New Jerseyites for his Twitter snow-shoveling service. In 2012, Booker saved a neighbor from a burning house (suffering smoke inhalation and second-degree burns) and teamed up with Gov. Chris Christie in a video that went viral.

Nor does he shun old media: He was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Street Fight" and Peabody Award-winning series "Brick City" (described a real-life version of "The Wire"). The mayor emerged in a 2009 war with Conan O'Brien that showcased his ability to straddle digital and broadcast worlds:

On September 23, O'Brien joked that Newark's health care program included a one-way bus ticket out of the capitol. Don't mess with Brick City: Booker, riding on a Sundance Channel exposure, took to the Web with his mock response. The back-and-forth entailed bans from airports, then entire states (Booker from the Sunshine State, "CoCo" from the Eastern Seaboard) until?yes?Hillary Clinton brokered a detente. Hands were shook, a $100k donation was granted, and battlefield history of scrappy Web vs. big TV was made. (Dec. 21, 2009, "Host Hostilities," Yahoo! Year in Review)

The quote that launched a thousand blogs: Booker's "Meet the Press" appearance might have gone largely unnoticed, until he criticized the negative tone from both sides:

[T]his kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It's nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity, stop attacking Jeremiah Wright. This stuff has got to stop because what it does is it undermines, to me, what this country should be focused on. It's a distraction from the real issues. It's either going to be a small campaign about this crap or it's going to be a big campaign, in my opinion, about the issues that the American public cares about. (May 20, "Meet the Press")

Republicans embraced his 88 words, while Democrats both berated and defended him.

Cory Booker and the Big Bain Backfire: a sampling of comments
Backlash Support (dubious and otherwise) Backlash against the backlash
"...[O]n this particular instance he was just wrong." (Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod) "An urban mayor who nearly DIED saving neighbor from a fire, has earned right 2 demand integrity & courage from other leaders" (Civil rights activist Van Jones) "I would not have backed off the comments if I were Mayor Booker." (Former Tenn. Rep. Harold Ford, Jr.)
"Booker appears to have damaged the Obama campaign's efforts to define Mr. Romney in the early weeks of the general-election race." (May 22, Christian Science Monitor) "Yes, doggone it. It was a shame to see Cory kind of back down from what his answer was which was so candid." (Sarah Palin) "Booker's independence from Democrats should come as little surprise." (May 21, New Jersey Ledger)
"I'll tell ya, it was astounding that they have listed this guy as a surrogate when he is intending to go on television and to trash everything Obama is making the case for." ("Hardball" commentator Chris Matthews) "I Stand with Cory. Don't Let the Obama Campaign Silence Support for Job Creation." (Republican National Committee petition) "[Chris Matthews] ought to celebrate all truth-telling, even when it does involve "betraying" partisan loyalties." (May 22, The Atlantic)

Booker played quick defense. He clarified his stance on YouTube and waxed philosophical on Facebook. He repeatedly declared his Twitter loyalty.

Cory Booker #IStandWithObama

Obama "surrogate" or saboteur?: Salon, which called Booker the "surrogate from hell," imagined more fiendish motives from a man "just too smart and too smooth to screw up so epically":

More likely, Booker went on the show to help himself and to advance his own long-term political prospects. And on that score, his appearance was a success ... It wouldn't be surprising if Booker has already heard from the White House, and surely he's now in for a world of abuse from Obama supporters. But that hardly means he made a mistake, at least in terms of his own ambition. (May 20, Salon)

As Salon points out, the 43-year-old was the Obama precursor before people even knew there was an Obama. Booker, who is black with Caucasian and Native American ancestry, is laden with Ivy League degrees and carries enormous working-class cred. Then again, a Fox News editorial not only called the Obama campaign ad a "brilliant pivot point," but declared that Booker gave the president a chance to reinforce the message.

Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, made headlines calling the ad "nauseating to the American public," and that gave Mr. Obama the perfect opportunity to attack Mr. Romney, oh so effectively ... Despite what pundits say about Mr. Booker's performance on "Meet the Press," Mayor Booker played the shill so well?he deserves an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. (May 22, Fox News)

And who's to say both scenarios are mutually exclusive? In the meantime, Booker can look fondly back at days when both sides could work together?what a difference a month can make.

The Craziest Builds from Maker Faire 2012

It's time to go cycling. Gregory de Gouveia built this big bike clock from junk cycles people had thrown out. By rigging up combinations of 4:1, 3:1, 2.5:1, and 2:1 gear ratios, de Gouveia got the 12:1 and 60:1 ratios necessary for a proper timepiece capable of clocking seconds, minutes, and hours.?

A combination of a car battery and solar panel keeps the cycle clock ticking. The piece will run on solar power alone, but de Gouveia demonstrated to PM that if even a tiny portion of the panel were temporarily shaded from the hot California sun, the clock would slow down and get out of whack.

George Heymont: Don't Miss FWD: Life Gone Viral!

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, stop what you're doing right now and click here to order tickets to FWD: Life Gone Viral, the wickedly brilliant new comedy that is scheduled to run through June 10 at The Marsh (but which I suspect will be extended through the summer). I have no doubt that many people will want to see this show more than once. As well they should.

FWD: Life Gone Viral (Photo by: Ted Weinstein)

A collaboration between three veteran Bay area talents (Charlie Varon, David Ford, and Jeri Lynn Cohen), FWD: Life Gone Viral has Varon and Cohen going through their paces as:

  • The Russian, a man with some very interesting views about how YouTube and other social media act like a virus.
  • Donald Saperstein, a dying man who made a video in which he blamed his ex-wife for his cancer. His video went viral, inspiring patients around the world to rethink their approach to a terminal illness.
  • Dr. Lilian Steinberg, Saperstein's ex-wife who, as an oncologist, must break the news to one of her patients that his laboratory results were mistaken for those of another man with the same name. Lilian's ex has a talent for driving her up the wall. Although she is an extremely ethical medical provider, there are times when revenge sure sounds sweet. When Donald asks if he can move back in with Lilian and their children for the final stages of his disease (so that he can be close to his family and, coincidentally, be able to have them care of him), she's faced with the ugly choice between being compassionate or a doormat.
  • Adam Roth, Lilian's patient who, now that he's been given a reprieve from cancer, can't stop thinking about how to take advantage of the moment in a world of burgeoning social media. Adam has also become infatuated with Lilian and, although his flattery warms a part of Lilian's ego that has not been stroked in eons, it also makes her vulnerable to the strangest kinds of temptation.
  • Ellen Green, Adam's ex-wife who recognizes Donald and Lilian from their YouTube videos and realizes that they are engaging in an online spat.
  • Janet Chandler, a tireless and tiresome representative for Susan G. Komen For The Cure who is, to put it politely, a relentless advocate.
  • Dr. Margaret Dyer, a director at the Mayo Clinic who embraces the use of Saperstein's video as a teaching tool because it helps to lighten the workload for her professional staff, but must later retract her endorsement.
  • Zizo Slavek, a medical researcher who explains that "Human beings crave sugar, so we invented Coca-Cola. Human beings crave fat, so we invented Crisco. Human beings crave attention, so we invented YouTube. And now, we have diabetes and heart disease, and soon we'll have diseases of overexposure."
  • A pair of tiny unarmed electronic spy drones created to resemble the proverbial fly on the wall.

Varon has always been a gifted monologist whose talent for characterization has charmed audiences in such one-man shows as 1994's Rush Limbaugh in Night School and 2009's Rabbi Sam. A writer of great wit and intellectual acuity, his ability to tie his characters in knots is like watching one of filmdom's great farces (One, Two, Three or It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World) without a chase scene or any slamming doors.

While Varon has usually worked alone onstage, he blossoms opposite Jeri Lynn Cohen (a cancer survivor who is a charter member of the Word For Word Performing Arts Company). An artist whose fierce talent as a communicator can cascade through flashes of irony, pathos, bitterness, and comedy in the twinkle of an eye, Cohen's acting is a joy to watch.

Developed through long hours of improvisation by Varon, Cohen, and Ford, FWD: Life Gone Viral has emerged as a farcical expos? about how the Internet has changed our lives (from enabling the kind of exhibitionism that leads to nipple-piercing videos to spiking the competitiveness of stupid men who are driven by a statistical lust for more "hits" and "likes"). The audience has to be on the edge of its seats to catch some of the rapid transitions between characters as well as the numerous references to social media and pop culture that whiz by.

Unlike two-actor plays that depend on rapid costume changes (The Mystery of Irma Vep, Greater Tuna), FWD: Life Gone Viral depends on an intelligent audience being able to keep pace with the comedic brilliance unfurling before them at a furious pace. From learning how to spy on people with one's cell phone (or, if you can afford it, a miniature drone) to deciding whether or not to forgive your selfish ex-spouse, The Marsh's new show offers a roller coaster ride through a new world of bits, bytes, hits, and likes.

Not only is FWD: Life Gone Viral one of the best pieces to be developed by Ford and Varon (helped immensely by Cohen's contribution), this is one of the few shows they've worked on that can be performed by others. I hope the performance rights turn into a steady revenue stream for all involved. Here's the trailer:

In Colorado, same-sex marriage remains a hot issue

(AP) ? Minutes after President Barack Obama announced he supported gay marriage, the Democratic governor of Colorado choked back tears in Denver as he ordered state lawmakers to reconsider a civil-unions measure that Republicans had defeated the day before.

In the week that followed, the debate over equal rights for same-sex couples consumed the state Capitol. And while Republicans ultimately succeeded in killing the measure, Republicans and Democrats alike acknowledge that the emotional standoff over the issue could help shape the White House campaign in this presidential battleground state this fall.

"Go back to your communities, go back to your neighborhoods, go back to your churches and let them know that the fight continues," Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty implored gay-marriage opponents gathered outside the Capitol last Tuesday. He was looking to rally the state's huge number of religious conservatives who long have been the foot-soldiers in efforts to both oppose civil unions and elect Republicans.

Democrats, in turn, predicted that their loyalists, as well as independents, will rally behind Obama in Colorado given his support of same-sex marriage. Obama planned to visit the state next Wednesday to deliver a commencement address at the U.S. Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, before attending fundraisers in Denver.

"That will have a positive impact on the chances of the president being re-elected and winning Colorado in November," said Democratic Rep. Mark Ferrandino, a gay lawmaker who co-sponsored the civil unions legislation and said that its supporters would be "very active" in the fall on the issue.

Since 2008, equal rights for same-sex couples ? either through civil unions or gay marriage ? has flared red-hot in just a handful of the dozen or so battleground states where the White House race will be decided. Two of those states, Iowa and New Hampshire, now recognize gay marriage, while North Carolina recently took the opposite stance, voting to strengthen its ban against gay marriage.

But the fight in Colorado ? coming just as Obama disclosed his new position ? was especially bitter, and feelings on both sides are raw. So Republicans and Democrats are bracing for social issues like gay marriage and civil unions to factor into voters' calculations about whether to back the Democratic incumbent or presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who opposes allowing gay people to get married.

The economy, to be sure, is certain to dominate the race in the state. Colorado's unemployment rate is 7.9 percent, lower than in some swing states and marginally lower than the national average of 8.1 percent. But with joblessness falling, social issues like civil unions could well become more of an issue in voters' minds.

Less than six months before the election, Colorado's nine electoral votes are up for grabs and the race here is expected to be competitive. That's largely because of the fickle nature of a state that's evenly divided among registered Republicans, Democrats and independents.

Look no further than the state's evolution on same-sex partnerships as evidence of its swing nature.

Just six years ago, Coloradans overwhelmingly voted to change the state constitution to ban gay marriage after a campaign largely funded by Focus on the Family, a conservative group based in Colorado that's influential across the nation.

By this spring, though, there was enough bipartisan support in the state Legislature to approve civil unions. And yet GOP leaders twice used legislative maneuvers to stop same-sex recognition, most recently last Monday.

Republicans accused Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper of taking marching orders from the White House by pushing the civil union measure in hopes of diverting attention from the sluggish economic recovery.

"Make no mistake about it," McNulty said. "It's absolutely clear to me that Governor Hickenlooper is reading straight from President Obama's campaign playbook."

Democrats, in turn, argued that Colorado Republicans filibustered equality.

Some conservatives insist that Obama's position on marriage will hurt him in Colorado.

"Six years is not a long time," said Carrie Gordon Earll of CitizenLink, the public policy arm of Focus on the Family. She was referring to the state passage of its gay marriage ban. "I would think a majority of voters would say, 'That does not align with my views.'"

Others counter that Colorado's views may be changing as quickly as the nation's. Consider that a handful of Republicans in the House said they'd support civil unions, meaning the measure would have passed if GOP leaders hadn't maneuvered to prevent a vote. Senate Democrats have passed civil unions two years in a row, both times joined by Republican women in the Senate.

Some Republicans fear that the GOP's civil unions stand in Colorado could harm the party with independent voters.

"The truth is we may have not only sacrificed our razor-thin House majority, but we also may have permanently impaired Republican prospects in Colorado at all levels, including for the presidential race," said Alexander Hornaday, president of Colorado Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights organization.

Then there are those who doubt the issue's potency come the fall. Among them is Kirk Fordham, the executive director of the Denver-based Gill Action Fund. The political organization is funded by Tim Gill, a nationally prominent gay rights activist credited with helping fund a Democratic takeover of Colorado's legislature in 2005.

"By the time we get to November," Fordham predicted, "the attention will largely have shifted back to economic issues."

Effective Ecommerce Solutions to Enhance Your Business

The evolution of technology undoubtedly brought a lot of conveniences. One of which is the way businesses are conducted, shifting from brick and mortar business to E-commerce. E-commerce, or electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computing networks.

This form of business also involves transactions like electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, internet marketing, online transaction processing, inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. E-commerce is not limited to the Internet; it can also be accessed from a wide range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile devices, and telephones. In this sense, e-commerce has significantly made it easier for people to find and buy what they need.

?

E-commerce has tools and solutions that manage electronic businesses.

Computer programs intended for electronic businesses are a sequence of instructions written by programmers to perform a specified task with the aid of a computer. These programs (executable files) have special instructions that are implemented by the computer; the instructions are similar to those used in the practical management of businesses.

E-commerce solutions, provided by a technology services company, cater to both big and small businesses. They enable companies to acquire and satisfy customers, resulting in a positive financial outcome. Imprisoned star of 'Reality' impresses at Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? The breakout performance at the Cannes Film Festival this year is Aniello Arena's turn as a Naples fishmonger who becomes obsessed with appearing on a "Big Brother"-style TV show in "Reality."

But the star will not be walking the red carpet at the Italian movie's gala premiere Friday. He'll be where he has been for two decades ? in prison.

Arena is riveting in the film by "Gomorrah" director Matteo Garrone ? lively, likable and lost ? and many viewers were astonished to learn he is a lifer who has worked for a decade with the respected Fortezza prison theater company but has never appeared in a feature film.

"I wanted him to appear in 'Gomorrah,' but the judge wouldn't allow it," said Garrone, whose bloody crime drama won Cannes' second prize in 2008. "We received the authorization for him to appear in the film (Reality) but he was not allowed to come here to Cannes."

Garrone said the absence was "not too bitter a disappointment" for Arena, because the movie's success means he can continue acting. Movie publicists would not comment on the nature of his crime.

Incarceration ? mental rather than physical ? is a theme of the movie, the only Italian entry among 22 contenders for Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or. Arena plays Luciano, a hustling but cheery family man who becomes obsessed with the notion of television fame.

Garrone said the film depicts reality TV as "a paradise on Earth ? a kind of El Dorado that people want to reach." Entering the "Big Brother" house becomes an idea that traps Luciano and gradually takes over his life.

The director said the 40-something Arena's exposure to the outside world after years behind bars helped him capture the essence of a man who is beguiled by a world that is new to him.

"I think you can see that in his eyes and in his look," said Garrone. "The character had to be portrayed by someone who is quite candid."

It's a departure from "Gomorrah," his blood-soaked portrait of Naples' ruthless Camorra crime syndicate. Garrone said he spent a long time looking for a "powerful subject" for his follow-up feature before alighting on the idea of a simple tale that would allow him to show another slice of Neapolitan life and "portray with great love a character while denouncing an aspect of society."

It's hard not to see the story as a satire on our celebrity-obsessed culture, but Garrone wants it to have the timeless quality of a fable. He compares it to "Pinocchio," the story of a puppet who yearns to be a real boy. Luciano is a real man who yearns to be a celebrity.

"I don't think I have ever been a very realistic director," Garrone said. "I talk about reality and then transfigure it, lend another dimension ? and then it becomes a fable."

"Reality" is full of heart and humor ? especially from the voluble, Fellini-esque assortment of characters who make up Luciano's family and neighbors ? but it turns darker as Luciano's single-minded pursuit of fame leads to a kind of madness.

"Initially our idea was to produce a comedy," said screenwriter Ugo Chiti. "I think the comedy evolved ... and turned into a sort of tragedy."

Joran Van der Sloot to fight extradition to US

Joran Van der Sloot is alleged to have played a role in the disappearance of American Natalie Holloway on Aruba seven years ago. Joran Van der Sloot is currently in a Peruvian prison after confessing to killing a Lima woman in 2010.

Confessed murderer Joran Van?der?Sloot told a judge on Tuesday that he will fight extradition from Peru to the United States, where he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, his lawyer said.

Van?der?Sloot remains the prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of Holloway in Aruba. He faces an indictment in the U.S. for allegedly accepting $25,000 in early 2010 in exchange for an unfulfilled promise to lead her mother's lawyer to the body.

Judge Zenaida Vilca informed Van?der?Sloot of the U.S. extradition request during a closed door meeting at Piedras Gordas prison just north of Lima. The 24-year-old Dutchman told the judge he would fight extradition, his lawyer, Maximo Altez, said.

If he stays put, Van?der?Sloot could be released on parole after serving a third of his 28-year sentence for killing a Lima woman he met at a casino in May 2010, said Altez.

But if he were convicted in the U.S. he likely wouldn't qualify for early parole in Peru. Under the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty he would be returned to Peru to finish out his sentence. Then, if he were convicted in the U.S., he would be sent there serve the second sentence.

"It's not good for us if Van?der?Sloot goes to the United States because everyone hates him there and the members of the jury will thus be biased," said Altez. "We will defend ourselves with all the legal remedies possible."

Reporters were able to see Van?der?Sloot, from about 75 feet (25 meters), enter a room for the hearing, which was also attended by representatives of the U.S. and Dutch embassies.

The Dutchman smiled at the agents who accompanied him but did not respond to calls from the news media.

If Peru's Supreme Court approves the extradition request it will then need to be approved by the country's council of ministers.

Van?der?Sloot was sentenced in January after confessing to beating and strangling 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room five years to the day after Holloway disappeared on Aruba, the Dutch dependency where he grew up.

Another courageous casualty in Pakistan, journalism's most dangerous country

Murtaza Razvi, an editor at one of Pakistan's leading English newspapers, was murdered in Karachi yesterday. He was one of many journalists I met on a recent trip who have refused to give up their work despite threats.

Two weeks ago I was in an office in Karachi, Pakistan, with a room full of journalists, including Murtaza Razvi, an editor at Dawn newspaper, discussing challenges facing the country?s vibrant media, including risks to covering Pakistan. Yesterday I was e-mailed that he had been murdered.

Before I left for Pakistan a few weeks ago on a journalist exchange program sponsored by the East-West Center, I asked colleagues who reported in the country, both Pakistani and American, about their greatest challenge.

Americans complained of the government's game of ?smoke and mirrors,? a disinformation campaign that puts most other government propaganda efforts to?shame. The challenge for Pakistani journalists, on the other hand, was decidedly more severe. ?We have a completely free media in Pakistan, but no protection,? said one journalist based in Islamabad.

How severe? The country leads the world in journalist murders, the latest just yesterday.

Seven of the other eight Pakistani journalists at a meeting with my group proceeded to share stories of threats. It was common, they said, to receive a threat by a phone call from the Taliban for not getting enough quotes from them, from political parties for including the Taliban in a story or not being represented the way they saw fit, and even from Pakistan?s version of the CIA, the ISI.

But this wasn?t something that had them lining up to find a new job. It was just how things work. Most of the time the person on the other end of the line is bluffing, they said. They had gotten used to the fact that Pakistan was the deadliest country for journalists in 2010 and 2011, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. And killings there have been met with near-perfect impunity throughout the years. For some perspective, consider that there have been 19 unsolved murders of journalists since 2002. (see CPJ?s video)

When you put it that way, having to peer through smoke and mirrors to get to the heart of a story doesn't look so bad.

I visited the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting while I was in Pakistan. The ministry has jurisdiction over the rules and regulations relating to information, broadcasting, and the press. Like many Pakistanis we spoke to on this trip, the minister talked at length about how wonderful it was to have an active, independent, vibrant media that had absolutely no restrictions and how that was contributing to democracy in Pakistan.?

However, when we raised the question of safety and reported threats against journalist, Minister of Information Firdous Ashiq Awan (since replaced), without asking for details or pausing to smooth this over, said: ?Those are complete fabrications. It never happened. It?s not happening.?

We brought up the famous case of Syad Saleem Shazad, a prominent journalist who went missing after exposing Al Qaeda infiltration of the military. He had been ?warned? several times by the ISI for covering sensitive topics, according to his family. He was later found dead. The ISI, was implicated, though it denied involvement.

The minister dismissed the scenario of Shazad's murder as unproven. She did clarify that, "we condemn that sort of action." But she stuck with her statement that there were no threats or real dangers for journalists who were not "over smart." A former local journalist who now works in the ministry agreed with her.

At this point, Issam Ahmed, the Monitor?s Islamabad correspondent, who had been invited to the round table by the minister, shared a story about a time he had been reporting on a sensitive topic in northern Pakistan, when he was summoned into a car by agents to go meet with the ISI bureau chief. The car sped off at breakneck speed to the headquarters, where the chief warned him to ?not report critically.? So, Issam, said, it wasn't a death threat, but intimidation happens.
