Mayan what? Apocalypse 2012 quiet so far

With rumors of a Mayan apocalypse making the rounds online and at the water cooler, when do we know the world is out of danger from the various astronomical and other cataclysms claimed by some to spell doom?

Some have pegged the end on 12/21/12 at the moment of the winter solstice, which at one point had been estimated by the U.S. Naval Observatory to take place at 11:11 UTC, or 6:11 a.m. EST. The Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice, when the top half of the planet (everything north of the equator) will face away from the sun, actually occured at 11:12 UTC, or 6:12 a.m. EST. Either way, the moment has ticked by, and the world is still here.

Today does mark an end, to the 13th 144,000-day cycle (called a b'ak'tun) of the ancient Mayan Long Count Calendar. The least worried about this rumored doomsday date? The Mayas.

Their calm comes amidst some particularly startling freakouts elsewhere: Chinese farmers making "doomsday escape pods;" NASA being flooded with worried phone calls; and supposedly mystical mountains in Europe getting overrun with apocalypse tourists. Oh yeah, and some kids got two days off school. In Michigan, two counties cancelled classes Thursday and Friday, citing both fears about school violence after the elementary school shooting in Connecticut last week and rumors about the end of the world causing distraction, according to CBS Detroit. [Mayan Doomsday (Not): Coverage & Countdown]

This week in the northwestern province of Qinghai, the government arrested more than 400 members of a doomsday-preaching group called the Church of the Almighty God, confiscating computers, banners, books, cellphones and other items, The Guardian reported.

Like many rumored doomsdays -- from a 1910 scare tied to Halley's Comet and a doomy divination by televangelist Pat Robertson in 1982 to TV preacher Harold Camping's 2011 claim -- that have come and gone, this one seems to have left Earth unscarred. Even so, social scientists have said the Mayan apocalypse does stand out from the rest. Most past scares have been sparked by charismatic leaders issuing divine proclamations. The Dec. 21 scare, however, was more of a grassroots prediction that seemed to pop up almost entirely online.

But where did it come from? Dec. 21 on the Western calendar likely corresponds to the end of the 13th b'ak'tun of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, one of three calendars the ancient Maya used to count time. The calendar works by counting first days, then 20-day chunks of time, then 260-day periods and 7,200-day periods. Ticking up like a car odometer, the calendar finally keeps track of 144,000-day blocks of time called b'ak'tuns.

Continuting the cycle, 20 tuns become one ka'tun (7,200 days total) and 20 ka'tuns become one b'ak'tun (144,000 days total, or close to 400 years).

By matching Mayan calendar dates to our own calendar, researchers have concluded that Dec. 21, 2012, is the likely date for the last day of the 13th b'ak'tun. (Dec. 23 or Dec. 24 are other possibilities, thanks to different units on the calendar turning over at different times of day.)

Written in modern translation, that makes Dec. 21, in Mayan date, 13.0.0.0.0. Tomorrow, Dec. 22 will be 13.0.0.0.1. The ancient Maya believed that 13 b'ak'tuns represented one full cycle of creation, but they did not predict the world would come to an end. In fact, their calendar includes some rarely-used units of time even larger than b'ak'tuns that would have allowed the Maya to count millions of years into the future, had their empire not crumbled around A.D. 900.?

Re-channeling Stress into Something Positive

Re-channeling Stress into Something Positive

What if someone told you there was a way that you could re-channel the negative effects of stress into something that is productive and positive? What if someone told you that you literally redefine yourself into a negative belief when you are constantly in stressful situations? Would you believe them, and more importantly, would you listen?

There is no doubt that stress is something that we all encounter, as the negative effects of it can reshape our current state of mind. For the most part, when this occurs we don?t even realize it, as our inner-senses are transformed as if we were wearing some sort of blindfold. Stress management is important during our normal routines in life, and without managing the effects of stress properly; we can succumb into a state that is incomprehensible. Let us look at two specific ways in which we can re-channel stress while creating while an atmosphere of change.

Come to the realization that not everything in life can be changed

When we start thinking of what could have been and how we should have done something different, the realization is simple, we cannot change what has already occurred. When we put ourselves into a position or mindset of constantly reliving the past, we are introducing stress into our lives. With that being said, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to accept the fact that not everything can be changed and move on. Plan for the future, worry about what can be changed, and then change it.

Suppressing guilt or having resentment towards others will only bring about negative afflictions. These afflictions will surely change your outlook on things and cloud your better judgment. When this occurs, you will make irrational decisions which will ultimately add to your current state. Following this will help to bring resolve to your life while making you hopeful for things to come, instead of what could have happened.

Re-channel: Create a list of any past situations, relationships, instances, and any mistakes that you feel that you may have made. Literally, write all this down along with the negative feelings that each one may have created. If you feel that you are to blame for a relationship that has gone bad and you feel angry because of it, then write it down. After this is done, look at each instance and the feelings that it has caused and ask yourself, ?What can I do to finally get closure?? If you need to make a phone call to a past friend, then do so. If you need to ask for forgiveness from another, then do so. The bottom line with this is that you will never be at peace with yourself unless you are able to move on entirely. In most instances, to have closure all you have to do is let it go.

Do not be absorbed by other people?s problems as they will soon become your problems.

Some people constantly live on an emotional roller coaster and they will take anyone along for the ride if they stand in their way. When around one of these individuals get out of their way, as being around them will surely add to your level of stress. Making this personal to you will surely put yourself into a position as their problems will soon become your problems.

If you are in an area where there are loud and un-ruling people around, change locations. If someone is trying to vent their personal anger to you, be polite, and excuse yourself from the situation. You cannot control the behavior of others, but you can surely control being around the behavior itself.

Re-channel: Look at past occurrences where someone else has been able to add to your own stress. Do you see any patterns in these such as similar situations or the same people? If so, devise an alternate strategy which takes you out of those similar occurrences or away from the same people as a means of reducing your own stress. When doing so, make sure that you are able to remain comfortable with your surroundings and the situation that you are moving towards. Become familiar with this course of action so that it can be easily implemented in the future.

Managing stress for continual happiness

Learning how to deal with stress by re-channeling the effects of what causes it can be a key to being happy. No one will argue that stress overcomes many of us from time to time, but determining specific indicators as to the onset and then dealing with changing that will help to eliminate it all-together. When doing so, you will notice a substantial difference in your personal well-being as well as your personal satisfaction. Ultimately, this will bring about situational awareness of stress management, as self-help will help to preserve you.

Hobbit in terms of business and customer service ? Nicereply Blog

It is getting nice Christmassy and I bet that all of us are looking forward for this time. But my inspiration doesn?t come from Christmas today. Today I was inspired by a movie every Lord of the rings fan (as me) wanted to see really badly. Yes you are guessing right, Hobbit.

As we already expanded our services beyond the customer service, I would like to present you not just this perspective, but also a businessman point of view.

You may think that there is no connection between this fantasy and reality, because it is just impossible to go to the mountains and kill a dragon. But what I would like to share with you is the idea of an epic journey.

?

Let me introduce the business perspective at the first place: At the beginning was Bilbo visited by horde of hungry dwarfs and invited to the journey. Unexpected visit one must say. But to face the truth change doesn?t bother to inform us in advance in the real life as well. You may not be invited to the journey by dwarves, trolls or any other kind of bred, but if you have a dream there may be somebody willing to give you the opportunity to reach for it. Bilbo made a good choice by deciding to join. Don?t be afraid to go for the journey of your life too, whether you want a little corner shop or a big sweatshop go for it!

The customer service point of view is more straight forward. Once, I have read a beautiful quote, which fits here really well: There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.

?

Hope you enjoyed and have a nice Christmas.

North Dakota is fastest-growing state, thanks to oil boom

Jim Urquhart / Reuters file

Brian Waldner is covered in mud and oil while wrestling a pipe from a True Company oil drilling rig outside Watford, N.D., Oct. 20, 2012. Many people have moved to North Dakota to work in oil drilling.

While America?s population growth remained flat, an oil boom drew hordes of job-seekers to North Dakota, making it the fastest-growing state over the past year, according to Census Bureau data released Thursday.

North Dakota?s population climbed by 2.17 percent between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012 -- a pace nearly three times faster than that of the nation as a whole, the bureau said.

The Peace Garden State wound up with roughly 15,000 more people than it had the year before ? largely because of people moving there from other states.

?We?ve all heard about the fracking and oil production and mining. There is a real influx for jobs,? said Census Bureau demographer Katrina Wengert.

North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Al Anderson says the "fastest-growing" designation isn?t surprising, given that the state has been steadily adding jobs over much of the past decade.?The state has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, at 3.1 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.?

And it?s not just oil. Agriculture is big business in North Dakota, and advanced manufacturing, technology-based businesses and tourism also have grown, Anderson said.

?We currently have about 22,000 job openings in North Dakota today. Of those, only a third are in our 17 oil-and gas-producing counties,? he said. "It?s more than just oil, but it?s oil that put us on map in the national press.?

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

Following North Dakota in terms of percent increase over the same period were the District of Columbia (2.15 percent), Texas (1.67 percent), Wyoming (1.60 percent), Utah (1.45 percent) and Nevada (1.43 percent). North Dakota ranked only 37th in growth between the 2000 and 2010 censuses and climbed to sixth between 2010 and 2011.?Each of the 10 fastest-growing states were in the South or West with the exception of North Dakota and South Dakota.?

The only two states to lose population between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012, were Rhode Island (-354 people or -0.03 percent) and Vermont (-581 or -0.09 percent).

According to the Census Bureau, America as a whole saw its population increase by 2.3 million from 2011 to 2012, to 313.9 million, for a growth rate of just 0.75 percent.

?The growth rate in the U.S. has picked up just a little bit from last year. Still, it?s one of the lowest U.S. growth rates since the Great Depression,? said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings Institution.?

However, the numbers do suggest ?a glimmer of comeback fever? for the Mountain West and Southeast, regions that have been struggling with the housing bust and high unemployment in recent years, Frey said.

?It?s not like people are moving around a lot, but we do see the tip of the iceberg of the Sun Belt coming back.?

Genetic defect causing fragile X-related disorders more common than thought

Dec. 21, 2012 ? A single genetic defect on the X chromosome that can result in a wide array of conditions -- from learning and emotional difficulties to primary ovarian insufficiency in women and tremors in middle-aged men -- occurs at a much greater frequency than previously thought, research led by the UC Davis MIND Institute has found.

The research is based on the first large-scale, multi-center newborn screening effort for the defect in the United States, conducted in a group of more than 14,200 male and female infants at three research university medical centers piloting a new infant screening test developed at UC Davis.

The study, "FMR1 CGG Allele Size and Prevalence Ascertained Through Newborn Screening in the United States," was led by Flora Tassone, professor-in-residence in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, and was conducted using blood spots obtained from infant heel pricks as part of the normal newborn genetic screening process. It is published online Dec. 20 in the journal Genome Medicine.

The investigators examined the prevalence of expanded alleles of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene. Defects in FMR1 cause conditions as diverse as fragile X syndrome -- the leading cause of intellectual disability and the leading known single-gene cause of autism -- and a Parkinson's disease-like condition called fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, or FXTAS. The term "fragile X" is used because of the altered appearance of the X chromosome among sufferers from the conditions.

"This study demonstrates that there is a higher frequency of mutations of the FMR1 gene across racial and ethnic groups than previously believed," said Randi Hagerman, medical director of the UC Davis MIND Institute and one of the world's leading experts on fragile X-related conditions. "It also demonstrates that newborn screening for fragile X mutations is technically feasible in a large-scale setting using the blood spot technique developed by Dr. Tassone."

The degree of disability from defects in FMR1 depends upon the number of repetitions of the sequence of the proteins cytosine-guanine-guanine (CGG) in the promoter region of the gene. The range of repeats in normal individuals is between six and 40. CGG repeats greater than 200 cause what is called the full mutation and fragile X syndrome. Fewer repeats -- in the range of 55 to 200 -- result in a variation called a premutation.

The current study found the estimated prevalence of the premutation to be 1 in 200 females, a finding somewhat greater than earlier estimates. However, it estimates the prevalence among males to be 1 in 400 -- double what had previously been reported. The researchers said that the sample size in the current study was not great enough to estimate the true prevalence of the full fragile X mutation, currently estimated at between 1 in 2,500 and 1 in 8,000 females and 1 in 5,000 males.

While most people with the premutation appear normal, some individuals can have mild difficulties in childhood, such as such as learning problems or emotional difficulties including social anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), said Hagerman, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Individuals with the premutation also can suffer from FXTAS, which causes debilitating tremors, balance problems and dementia primarily in older men, and premature ovarian insufficiency in women.

Tassone, a researcher affiliated with the MIND Institute, is one of the world's leading experts on screening and identification of the FMR1 mutation. Her polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based test used in the current study was described in January 2008 in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.

"This study shows that newborn screening for the FMR1 mutation is technically possible on a large scale," Tassone said. "However, the screening will identify far more carrier and gray-zone infants than those with a full fragile X mutation. As we now know that there may be clinical involvement with these individuals, such as FXTAS, we need to better understand the impact of identifying these mutations on families before widespread newborn screening can be instituted."

Hagerman said that the study is important because early intervention can be helpful for children with these mutations who experience developmental problems. In addition, a baby who is positive for the mutation will have other family members who also carry mutations. Genetic counseling is essential for the family members, in addition to treatment for the medical or psychiatric problems associated with the premutation or full mutation, she said.

Huge 'Sea Monster' Ruled Ancient Rivers

Giant reptilian predators with a lifestyle comparable to modern freshwater dolphins may have made their home in ancient rivers, researchers say.

While dinosaurs dominated the land, a variety of reptiles reigned in the seas, and included dolphin-shaped ichthyosaurs and the Loch-Ness-Monster-like plesiosaurs. In the new study, scientists investigated another similar beast ??extinct carnivores known as mosasaurs, generally thought of as gigantic finned marine lizards similar and perhaps even related to present-day monitor lizards.

The mosasaur fossils were unearthed starting in 1999 from an open-pit mine in the Bakony Hills of western Hungary. The researchers discovered several 84-million-year-old specimens, ranging from small juveniles to adults 20 feet (6 meters) long that had limbs like a land-dwelling lizard, a flattened, crocodilelike skull, and a tail unlike other known members of the mosasaur family.

The fossils were discovered in areas that were once freshwater floodplains home to fishes, amphibians, turtles, crocodiles, terrestrial lizards, pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds. This newfound reptile appears to be the first known freshwater mosasaur, an animal comparable to modern river dolphins now seen in the Amazon, Ganges and Yangtze rivers.

The new species is named Pannoniasaurus inexpectatus. "Pannonia" refers to the part of Hungary it was found in, "saurus" means lizard, and "inexpectatus" refers to the unexpected occurrence of this

mosasaur in freshwater environments. [T. Rex of the Seas: A Mosasaur Gallery]

"The size of Pannoniasaurus makes it the largest known predator in the waters of this paleo-environment," said researcher L?szl? Mak?di, a paleontologist at the Hungarian Natural History Museum.

The evolutionary history of mosasaurs suggested by these new findings is remarkably similar to that of whales and dolphins, Mak?di told LiveScience.

"To the best of our knowledge, the ancestors of mosasaurs and of some related reptiles moved from land to aquatic realms at least 100 million years ago. Whether these were marine or freshwater environments, it is [uncertain], however some finds in Japan suggests the latter," Mak?di said.

"Then sometime between this event and 85 million years before present ? the age of our locality in Hungary ? some primitive members of the already-marine mosasaurs adapted to freshwater life. Pannoniasaurus represents these. This scenario is very similar to the evolutionary history of cetaceans ? whales, dolphins."

The researchers plan to investigate new Pannoniasaurus fossils as they pop up in the hopes of learning more about the beast's biology, such as how it moved and what it might have eaten, Mak?di said.

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Dec. 19) in the journal PLoS ONE.

Law change needed to access immigration database : Hispanic Ohio

Home / News / Law change needed to access immigration database

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Accessing a federal database of legal immigrants to examine whether they can legally vote in Wisconsin would require a law change and cost over $1 million over the next five years.

That is according to a report prepared by staff at the state elections board that is to be discussed at its meeting Tuesday.

The Government Accountability Board report comes in response to a request sent in July from Republican state Sen. Mary Lazich who asked that the board look into using the U.S. Department of Homeland Security database to weed out illegal aliens who may be voting.

The GAB report does not take a position on whether the necessary law changes to access the database should be made.

Nine states either have used the database or plan to.

Using The Best Ways How To Cure Hemorrhoid Issues Is Important ...

Hemorrhoids are a fact of life for many people and something that they often just learn to deal with. There are, however, many different remedies to help alleviate symptoms and reduce their size, along with teaching you how to cure hemorrhoid issues. Other than surgical intervention, there are not any true complete cures for the ailment, but there are things that make them much more tolerable.

Diet is considered to be one of the best methods to manage the ailment by both traditional and alternative health practitioners alike. Adequate fluid intake of at least eight glasses of water per day coupled with a diet rich in fiber and low in processed chemicals is the recommended diet for sufferers. Studies show that nearly half of sufferers report huge relief upon simply changing their diet alone.

When diet change alone does not help, many people turn to other proven treatment methods which are found to help in some way. One of the most commonly used is a sitz bath. In this treatment, people sit in a shallow bath of warm water a few times per day, especially after using the restroom.

Pain management is often accomplished through simply taking over the counter medicines such as acetaminophen. When combined, these treatments usually help to alleviate symptoms within less than two weeks. Should there be little to no change, sufferers can opt for more intensive medical treatments, such as banding, injections, cauterization, or even surgery.

Banding is a painless treatment which uses small rubber bands to cut off the blood circulation to the protrusions, or piles as they are sometimes referred. Within about one week the blood flow is ceased and the hemorrhoid will fall away. Injections are slightly more painful but are quick and involve injecting a solution in to the area to create a small scar.

To prevent growths from coming back, lasers are used to cauterize the area and create a small burn. Only when other treatment methods have failed should people seek out surgical treatment methods. A Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure which, while minor, involves anesthesia and comes with a high success rate.

While this ailment can be very bothersome and painful it is extremely common and many people find ideas on how to cure hemorrhoid outbreaks from one or more of the treatments available. In addition to changing diet and taking baths, there are topical creams and compresses that can also provide relief and alleviate symptoms. These include Witch Hazel and other herbs.

Getting A Signature Scent ? Shopping and Product Reviews

It is actually finest to remember that the quest for getting a signature scent is just as important because the outward style in having tailored clothes and pairing the appropriate tie with the suitable shirt. Simply because most males simply put on a scent offered to them as a gift or purchased hastily from a cute sales girl offering tote bags and beach towels in a division shop, a lot of guys wear copious amounts of tobacco and coriander laced colognes that do not specifically mix nicely with their natural pheromones because of this. A bit study must be done in obtaining a signature scent with all the results ordinarily paying off in spades once the proper fragrance is identified. For the modern woman, though, this may possibly be found in the Bond No 9 Signature Scent.
You will discover methods in figuring out a signature scent apart from producing the error of working with precisely the same cologne a dad made use of. The understanding of what form of skin an individual has, whether or not oily or dry will be the initially step in understanding the best way to find a signature scent. Click here for more info on a signature scent that is most effective for the modern lady.
Oily skin enhances and amplifies cologne just as body hair keeps the scent of a cologne close to a person. Due to elements that balance out the stronger all-natural odors that the skin is secreting, moist and oily skin responds most effective to lighter citrus based scents. For any fresher feeling, it is actually most effective to stay with airy or summertime scents. Christmas gifts for her, then again, may well be a bundle of this fragrance for the modern woman.
As dry or sensitive skin will not hold a scent provided that oily skin, cologne requirements a thing to adhere to within this case. Placing on far more of any scent is not the answer in contrast to well-known belief. For the reason that they?ve a better presence and can keep together with the wearer longer than a lighter fragrance, heavier or thicker scents with undertones of tobacco and musk should really be attempted as an alternative.

This would be awesome. I love bluestacks. This will certainly take away from the "windows aint got no apps" even though it's not true in the first place. Just like meego and nitdroid. Windows and bluestacks are the perfect complement. I might even go as far as saying like mac and bootcamp and linux and wine.

they could have thought of this sooner though, they wouldnt have to be bothered with making apps and it would've helped surface RT sell a little more...

New technique connects multi-walled carbon nanotubes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Using a new method for precisely controlling the deposition of carbon, researchers have demonstrated a technique for connecting multi-walled carbon nanotubes to the metallic pads of integrated circuits without the high interface resistance produced by traditional fabrication techniques.

Based on electron beam-induced deposition (EBID), the work is believed to be the first to connect multiple shells of a multi-walled carbon nanotube to metal terminals on a semiconducting substrate, which is relevant to integrated circuit fabrication. Using this three-dimensional fabrication technique, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology developed graphitic nanojoints on both ends of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which yielded a 10-fold decrease in resistivity in its connection to metal junctions.

The technique could facilitate the integration of carbon nanotubes as interconnects in next-generation integrated circuits that use both silicon and carbon components. The research was supported by the Semiconductor Research Corporation, and in its early stages, by the National Science Foundation. The work was reported online October 4, 2012, by the journal IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology.

"For the first time, we have established connections to multiple shells of carbon nanotubes with a technique that is amenable to integration with conventional integrated circuit microfabrication processes," said Andrei Fedorov, a professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. "Connecting to multiple shells allows us to dramatically reduce the resistance and move to the next level of device performance."

In developing the new technique, the researchers relied on modeling to guide their process parameters. To make it scalable for manufacturing, they also worked toward technologies for isolating and aligning individual carbon nanotubes between the metal terminals on a silicon substrate, and for examining the properties of the resulting structures. The researchers believe the technique could also be used to connect multi-layered graphene to metal contacts, though their published research has so far focused on carbon nanotubes.

The low-temperature EBID process takes place in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) system modified for material deposition. The SEM's vacuum chamber is altered to introduce precursors of the materials that researchers would like to deposit. The electron gun normally used for imaging of nanostructures is instead used to generate low energy secondary electrons when the high energy primary electrons impinge on the substrate at carefully chosen locations. When the secondary electrons interact with hydrocarbon precursor molecules introduced into the SEM chamber, carbon is deposited in desired locations.

Unique to the EBID process, the deposited carbon makes a strong, chemically-bonded connection to the ends of the carbon nanotubes, unlike the weakly-coupled physical interface made in traditional techniques based on metal evaporation. Prior to deposition, the ends of the nanotubes are opened using an etching process, so the deposited carbon grows into the open end of the nanotube to electronically connect multiple shells. Thermal annealing of the carbon after deposition converts it to a crystalline graphitic form that significantly improves electrical conductivity.

"Atom-by-atom, we can build the connection where the electron beam strikes right near the open end of the carbon nanotubes," Fedorov explained. "The highest rate of deposition occurs where the concentration of precursor is high and there are a lot of secondary electrons. This provides a nanoscale sculpturing tool with three-dimensional control for connecting the open ends of carbon nanotubes on any desired substrate."

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes offer the promise of higher information delivery throughput for certain interconnects used in electronic devices. Researchers have envisioned a future generation of hybrid devices based on traditional integrated circuits but using interconnects based on carbon nanotubes.

Until now, however, resistance at the connections between the carbon structures and conventional silicon electronics has been too high to make the devices practical.

"The big challenge in this field is to make a connection not just to a single shell of a carbon nanotube," said Fedorov. "If only the outer wall of a carbon nanotube is connected, you really don't gain much because most of the transmission channel is under-utilized or not utilized at all."

The technique developed by Fedorov and his collaborators produces record low resistivity at the connection between the carbon nanotube and the metal pad. The researchers have measured resistance as low as approximately 100 Ohms -- a factor of ten lower than the best that had been measured with other connection techniques.

"This technique gives us many new opportunities to go forward with integrating these carbon nanostructures into conventional devices," he said. "Because it is carbon, this interface has an advantage because its properties are similar to those of the carbon nanotubes to which they are providing a connection."

The researchers don't know exactly how many of the carbon nanotube shells are connected, but based on resistance measurements, they believe at least 10 of the approximately 30 conducting shells are contributing to electrical conduction.

However, handling carbon nanotubes poses a significant challenge to their use as interconnects. When formed through the electric arc technique, for example, carbon nanotubes are produced as a tangle of structures with varying lengths and properties, some with mechanical defects. Techniques have been developed to separate out single nanotubes, and to open their ends.

Fedorov and his collaborators -- current and former graduate students Songkil Kim, Dhaval Kulkarni, Konrad Rykaczewski and Mathias Henry, along with Georgia Tech professor Vladimir Tsukruk -- developed a method for aligning the multi-walled nanotubes across electronic contacts using focused electrical fields in combination with a substrate template created through electron beam lithography. The process has a significantly improved yield of properly aligned carbon nanotubes, with a potential for scalability over a large chip area.

Once the nanotubes are placed into their positions, the carbon is deposited using the EBID process, followed by graphitization. The phase transformation in the carbon interface is monitored using Raman spectroscopy to ensure that the material is transformed into its optimal nanocrystalline graphite state.

"Only by making advances in each of these areas can we achieve this technological advance, which is an enabling technology for nanoelectronics based on carbon materials," he said. "This is really a critical step for making many different kinds of devices using carbon nanotubes or graphene."

Before the new technique can be used on a large scale, researchers will have to improve their technique for aligning carbon nanotubes and develop EBID systems able to deposit connectors on multiple devices simultaneously. Advances in parallel electron beam systems may provide a way to mass-produce the connections, Fedorov said.

"A major amount of work remains to be done in this area, but we believe this is possible if industry becomes interested," he noted. "There are applications where integrating carbon nanotubes into circuits could be very attractive."

Classmates Remember Teen Killed in Crash | FOX8.com ...

GARRETTSVILLE, Ohio ? Students at James A. Garfield High School in Garrettsville poured their emotions out on a bulletin board Wednesday, remembering a classmate who died in a crash late Tuesday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol?said Nicholas Stock, 16, was driving north on state Route 88 when his car slid across the center of the road into the path of a pickup truck travelling in?the opposite direction.

The accident happened as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy continued to push through northeast Ohio.

?The road conditions were definitely a factor,? said Ravenna Highway Patrol Post Commander Nakia Hendrix, adding ?it was wet and rainy at the time also we believe speed for conditions played a factor in the crash.?

Stock was wearing his seat belt at the time and was alone in his 1996 Toyota. His car collided sideways with the truck.

The teenager was a junior at the Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna but had many friends among classmates and faculty at Garfield High School, where administration made counselors available.

?In Garfield, we are all a close-knit community. This is a terrible thing to have to deal with all of our students right now,? said High School Principal Jennifer Mulhern.

The school sent letters home with students on Wednesday saying they are ?saddened and heartbroken? to report Stock?s death and are extending?its sympathies to the Stock family and to his girlfriend.

?Nick was a very quiet, thoughtful young man. He liked school. He loved his work with computers and he had an awesome future ahead of him working with computers,? said Mulhern.

Among those who admired Stock?s computer skills was Superintendent Chuck Klamer, who said he had asked the student to help him with the computers at his home.

?Nick was just an outstanding,?very polite young man, cared about his fellow students and fellow man, and I had Nick do some work for me using his skills with technology and he was just one of the finest people,? said Klamer.

?What a shame and a tragedy that he will not be able to contribute to society and live a life that he was prepared to live,? added Klamer, calling it one of the most difficult things he has had to ever deal with through his entire career.

Classmates were working on a way to appropriately memorialize Stock on Wednesday and to also send their condolences to his family.

?What I would like students to take away and learn from Nick?s death is life is so precious to make great decisions and good decisions at all times,? said Klamer.

Google's Eric Schmidt slams patent wars, still has nice things to say about Apple and Samsung

Eric Schmidt's recent trip to Seoul wasn't all spontaneous Gangnam dancing. Google's former-CEO / current executive chair had a lot to say during the Korean launch of the company's Nexus 7 tablet, bemoaning the patent wars that have ensnarled the industry, telling the crowd, "literally patent wars prevent choice, prevent innovation and I think that is very bad. We are obviously working through that and trying to make sure we stay on the right side of these issues." The war for marketshare ought to be fought with the release of better products, rather legal maneuvering, according to the executive.

But in spite of Apple's role in the battle -- and the company's decision to go it alone on products like its troubled Maps app -- Schmidt still had kind words for Cupertino, calling the company "a very good partner," and adding that the, "two companies are literally talking all the time about everything." The exec also told the crowd that he'd be meeting with Samsung, one of the company's "most important partners," during the trip, "as I do every time I come here."

How Usher Beat The Fatherhood Odds | Praise 1300

?

More than four years ago, in one of my first columns for The Root, I wrote about pop star Usher Raymond?s proud papa moments in a piece titled ?What My Father Could Learn From Usher.?

At the time black fatherhood was dominating the airwaves with shows featuring Snoop Lion (n?e Dog), Deion Sanders and Rev. Run. Adding to the list of Cliff Huxtable heir apparents was Usher, who had just married Tameka Foster, the mother of his unborn son. The wedding wasn?t well-received by fans or Usher?s own mother, Johnetta. The ?controversy? baffled me because all I could see was a man standing up for the woman he loved.

As a fatherless child, I was awed by Usher?s 2008 appearance on MTV?s TRL. Addressing the rumors swirling around his new marriage and threatening to suck it down into a tabloid abyss, Raymond grabbed a mic and looked all the haters out there in TV Land directly in the eye: ?I?m a black, strong man in America standing up for my people as a man,? Usher said to the camera.

?To my wife, to my son, to my family, I?m making a stand that a lot of us should make. I could?ve been like any other man who would have a child and just, you know, live with that woman and continue to just, you know, play the game. I?m tryna do it the right way. This is the way you should do it. Pay attention, fellas.?Four years ago I wrote that I?d wished my own father had received a message like that in 1980. A message about sticking around and sticking to your guns. A message about what men ?should? be doing as opposed to what too many men were doing. It resonated with me and with readers.

Sudan, South Sudan leaders make another push for border deal

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Sudan and South Sudan leaders will try again on Tuesday to seal a border security deal after failing to achieve a breakthrough in the previous two days, officials said on Monday as both sides disagreed over whether progress had been made.

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and southern counterpart Salva Kiir have been meeting in Ethiopia since Sunday in hopes of wrapping up peace talks after coming close to all-out war in April.

The African Union has been striving to broker a demilitarized buffer zone at the unmarked and disputed border to allow South Sudan to restart oil exports through the north, which would give a big lift to both battered economies.

Both nations are under pressure after a U.N. Security Council deadline expired on Saturday, although it was extended unofficially until Thursday when AU mediator Thabo Mbeki will report on whether a deal has been done, diplomats said.

Bashir and Kiir originally planned a one-day summit but have so far failed to agree during three long meetings on the details of a buffer zone map proposed by the AU.

Sudan has reservations about a 14-mile-(23-km)-long strip of land mapped out, while Juba has accepted the formula.

Sudan said it was hopeful that Bashir and Kiir would successfully conclude the talks on Tuesday.

"Both leaders will discuss the issues tomorrow at 10 o'clock ... We expect all issues to be solved positively," El-Obeid Morawah, spokesman for Khartoum's foreign ministry, told reporters after Bashir and Kiir met for two hours.

"There (was) progress today regarding the issue of 14 miles and the controversial issues were minor today compared to other days," he said.

SOUTH SEES OBSTACLES

But South Sudan's delegation appeared more doubtful.

"We have been facing some obstacles during the presidents' discussions. We haven't been able to solve this yet but tomorrow a final session will be held," Atif Keir, spokesman for Juba's delegation, told reporters.

He said the talks would only succeed if Sudan complied with a road map for peace proposed by the African Union, which has been trying to broker a comprehensive peace deal.

The armies of both nations fought for weeks in April along the unmarked and disputed border after a dispute escalated over how much South Sudan should pay to use oil pipelines that traverse the north to Red Sea ports.

The two reached an interim deal in August to restart oil exports from landlocked South Sudan after Juba turned off its wells in a row over export fees.

But Sudan insists on first reaching a security accord.

South Sudan, where most people follow Christianity and animism, seceded from the mainly Muslim north in July 2011 under a 2005 peace agreement that ended decades of civil war.

Western and African officials had hoped for broad peace accord but several rounds of talks in Addis Ababa have brought no visible progress on settling the fate of five disputed border areas. This will probably be left to a future round of negotiations or possible lengthy arbitration. (Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Rhincrew Luke and Galtee Max in conflict for the Grade A2 500 metres flat race ?

The Grade A2 500 metres flat has pulled together quite a few entries who have the potential to bag the ?102 prize money of the event. The 500 metres race will be hosted by Sheffield on Monday, 24th September. One of the most commendable and prosperous hounds up for the challenge tonight is the two-year-old brindle dog, Rhincrew Luke.

The lightly raced hound has progressed from the Grade T races to the Grade A2 and A3. He has won two out of the five career outings and has improved drastically through the last five races.

The N. Melbourne trained won the Grade A3 500 metres flat race on 11th September, 2012 at Sheffield. Breaking out of the second trap and then ruling over half the distance had him on the other end of the wire in 29.36 seconds. His lead of three lengths shoved Tamara into the second slot.

Striking a back-to-back, Archaton Pine?s son took charge of the track from the second spot, and landed the race in 29.78 seconds.

With the final ? of a length in his favour, the two-year-old had Outlier Rudi settling in the second position.

The 5 to 2 entry will once again race in the blue vest after having drawn the second trap.

A candidate to look out for is the two-year-old, Galtee Max. The E. Parker trained has a good fan following at Sheffield, and has won at the venue at several occasions. Ever since 12th May, 2012, he has raced over 500 metres only.

Crash?s son has won twice out of the last four outings.

He captured the Grade A2 500 metres flat on 20th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Picking up pace just when it was required, and then dealing with the cluster tactfully, had him charging on from the first spot, and reaching the wire in 29.67 seconds.

Next he nailed the Grade A2 500 metres flat race on 30th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Shifting from first to second stall did not break the winning composure due to the winning technique that got him beyond the wire in 29.57 seconds.

Galtee Max has drawn the box right next to Rhincrew Luke, the first trap.

Shane Bond backs Zaheer Khan to find form ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part II ? September 24, 2012

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond on Monday backed under-fire Indian seamer Zaheer Khan to regain his lost form soon.

?Every fast bowler experiences that phase, when you just don?t get the rhythm. Nothing new in that and Zaheer is just going through a rough patch. It?s all about rhythm,? said Bond, 37, while rejecting 'too much talk'.

The 33-year-old left-arm medium pacer hailing from Maharashtra has come under fire recently, after struggling against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan in T20 matches. Whilst the veteran seamer managed to claim at least one wicket each against the Black Caps and the islanders, he struggled for penetration against the rest of the two opposition. What brought Zaheer?s performance under scrutiny was his figures of 32 for 0 against the inexperienced Afghanistan batting line-up last Wednesday.

South Africa?s World T20 squad is enjoying a two-day break at a luxury beach?in the southern Sri Lankan town of Bentota, ahead of their Super Eight campaign, commencing in Colombo, on Friday.

"We?ve had a hectic touring schedule over the last few months and we felt the next couple of days would be a great opportunity for the players to get away from cricket and to recharge their resources," said coach Kirsten.

The Proteas advanced to the next stage of the mega event after comprehensively defeating Group C competitors Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. They will return to Colombo on Tuesday to start their preparations for the Super Eight stage opener against former champions India. Australia is the third team in the group while the fourth team will be decided based on the outcome of Pakistan-Bangladesh match on Tuesday.

Niall O?Brien, the middle order batsman of Ireland, hopes to remove talismanic West Indies opener Chris Gayle early on, come their must win match against the Caribbean side on Monday night.

?Hopefully one of the main bowlers can take a scalp early,? said O?Brien while speaking to media reporters on the eve of the do-or-die match. ?Gayle?s obviously a fine player but he's human, he can make a mistake. We need to make sure we take chance when it comes," he added further.

Australia has already qualified for the Super Eight stage and the winner of tonight?s match between Ireland and West Indies will be the other team from the Group B to advance to the next stage.
